The Carver College of Medicine Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology (Dr. Mulfaul lab) is seeking a Research Assistant. This Research Assistant will serve as a lab member of Dr. Kelly Mulfaul as part of a multidisciplinary laboratory focused on studying the disease mechanisms of Age-related macular degeneration with the goal of developing new therapeutic strategies. Responsibilities include care and maintenance of animal colonies, administration of tail vein injections, collection of ocular tissue and basic molecular biology techniques. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintain rodent colonies, preform genotyping and animal husbandry.
  • Perform tail vein injection and laser induced ocular injury models.
  • Tissue collection and processing-cryopreservation, cryosectioning, immunocytochemistry, PCR/qPCR, western blotting.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records.
  • Demonstrate the ability to multitask.
  • Work independently and collaboratively on research tasks.
  • Perform day-to-day lab tasks (e.g., stocking supplies etc.).

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or other biological science, or an appropriate combination of education and years of experience working in an academic research environment.
  • Experience with animal husbandry and the maintenance of mouse breeding colonies.
  • Experience with standard molecular biology and biochemical techniques (e.g., animal tissue sample collection, PCR/qPCR, and Western blot), common cell biology techniques (e.g., immunocytochemistry/immunohistochemistry).
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Macintosh and PC computers, including the applications Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Photoshop is desirable.
  • Basic understanding of standard molecular biology and biochemical techniques (e.g. nucleic acid extraction, PCR/qPCR, ICC/IHC, Western blot, etc.).
  • Experience with rodent disease modeling and tail vein injections.
