Research Associate – 100% remote position

Department of Occupational & Environmental Health

Position Specific Summary

The Department of Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health is seeking applicants for a full-time Research Associate position. The Research Associate will work under the direction of the Deputy Director on research projects of the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center (UI IPRC), funded by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND SPECIFIC JOB TASKS

 Research

·       Perform research on specified injury-related topics.

·       Coordinate submission and administration of human subjects research related information for specific injury-related projects.

·       Assist in preparing publications, reports and presentations.

·       Conduct literature searches using common library databases (e.g., PubMed, Embase, Web of Science) and summarize the literature.

·       Coordinate communications with field sites.

 Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations

·       Oversee primary data collection, including developing field data collection protocols and procedures.

·       Oversee development of screening and recruitment procedures, including development of data collection instruments.

·       Initiate the design and content of materials communicated to study participants.

·       Develop tools to collect and manage data from literature reviews.

·       Assist in developing and conducting program evaluations.

 Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications

·        Write research progress reports, including summarizing test results of participating investigators, and assist in the preparation of papers for publication.

·       Perform data management and coding of qualitative and quantitative data.

 Administrative and Project Management

·       Assist in completing progress reports and other reporting documentation to the funding agency.

·       Develop and submit Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications and maintain IRB status. 

·       Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.

·       Serve as a liaison to investigators, collaborators, federal and non-federal agencies, organizations, students, and individuals involved in Injury Prevention Research Center programs and projects.

·       Review program/project content with Injury Prevention Research Center faculty and staff.

·       Assure safety and compliance; respond to compliance and safety violations.

·       Assure staff are compliant with UI policies and procedures

·       Supervise undergraduate and graduate students.

·       Maintain cash handling plans according to University of Iowa requirements for paying participant incentives.

·       Prepare agendas for weekly and bi-weekly project meetings.

·       Ensure projects stay on their timelines.

·       Manage project resources by maintaining organized and updated filing systems.

·       Serve as the liaison between the University of Iowa team and collaborators.

 Facilities and Equipment Management

·       Troubleshoot and resolve problems with equipment (e.g., computers, printers), office space, and other facility-related issues.

 Supervision/Staffing

·       Manage daily study activities related to the study protocols; provide training and guidance to new staff/current staff regarding study protocols

·       Coordinate IPRC student activities and projects

·       Organize project meetings

Required qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum one year experience with project management.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Experience in conducting literature searches.
  • Experience developing human subject IRB applications, protocols, and/or data collection instruments.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel in Iowa and out-of-state with possible overnight stays.
  • Experience and proficiency with computer applications and software programs such as Word, Power Point, Excel.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health or related field.
  • Experience working in the injury and/or violence prevention field.
  • Experience working on a multidisciplinary team and able and willing to communicate both verbally and in writing with individual team members.
  • Demonstrated success in writing reports, research manuscripts and/or presenting at conferences.
  • Experience with design, publishing, and/or visualization software programs (e.g., Publisher, Canva, Tableau).
  • Experience with Endnote or another literature referencing software.
  • Experience in project management of research with human subjects.

Position and Application Details:

This position is eligible for remote work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location
