BASIC FUNCTION

Provide support for research by conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing results and performing operational duties associated with the laboratory animal and tissue culture research. Research in the health sciences is included in this job family.  Key areas of responsibilities include conducting research activities/experiments, collecting, analyzing and summarizing data, preparing reports, contributing to manuscripts/publications, administrative and project management, facilities and equipment management, and supervision/staffing.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Research:

  • Perform research activities in the areas of adipose tissue, metabolism and cardiovascular disease.

  • Research literature frequently to stay up to date with relevant research topics.  

  • Adapt and perform protocols from the literature.

  • Critically review literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing new hypotheses in conjunction with the principal investigator.

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations:

  • Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assure fidelity to protocols, may propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of experiment protocols.

  • Coordinates experimental plans with collaborators and core facilities.

  • Monitor, test and evaluate current procedures.

  • Identify and adhere to Quality Assurance practices to maintain validity and integrity of research data.

  • Apply new methods/theories.

  • Manage over 10 different mouse colonies, including mouse husbandry, genotyping, breeding and prioritization for various experiments.

Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications:

  • Perform statistical analysis of data and qualitative analysis.

  • Assist in the design of manuals, questionnaires, and forms.

  • Assist in preparing publications and presentations.

  • Contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition.

  • Present results/finds at team and departmental meetings; may present at local and national meetings.

Administrative and Project Management:

  • Make recommendations regarding the validity of research data.

  • Submit routine IACUC protocols.

  • Responsible for safety programs by following guidelines and maintaining required documentation in support of safety programs.

  • Manages and orders lab supplies.

Facilities and Equipment Management:

  • Coordinate and manage lab equipment.

  • Monitor environmental risks and quality control.

  • Test new equipment and troubleshoot equipment failures and repairs.

  • Coordinate software licenses as necessary to complete projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biology or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • 1 year of experience is required. 

  • Experience in mouse handling, genotyping, managing multiple mouse colonies, metabolic and cardiovascular phenotyping of mice, RNA and protein analysis, and tissue culture is desired.
