The Carver College of Medicine Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology is seeking a Research Associate to execute planned research activities using observation, measurement, and analytical techniques.  Perform animal experimentation and assist in animal care functions of research animals following facility standard operating procedures of transgenic, multi-line mouse colonies. 

 

Duties to include:

  • Conduct metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurophysiological experiments on animals (rodents) involving vascular cannulation and blood pressure recording, nerve activity recordings, metabolic cages etc
  • Work closely with the OAR facility and veterinarian staff to address concerns of animal care. Serve as liaison between the lab and OAR and IACUC
  • Order and maintain records of drugs/chemical agents and other supplies
  • Maintain, conduct, and document laboratory equipment inventories according to university policy and under the direction of the designated department administrator
  • Manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of each individual in a diverse work group, while providing each member including students and postdoctoral fellows with the opportunity to contribute to the goals of the unit.  Work to assure that all employees are respected and treated consistent with University policies in regard to equal employment opportunity and diversity
  • Coordinate the analysis of research findings and prepares detailed summaries for submission to lab members, collaborators, sponsoring agencies etc

Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in a biomedical related field, animal science, veterinary technology or other related science program or an equivalent combination of education
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of progressively responsible experience in an animal caretaking or research laboratory environment
  • Experience with surgical procedures in mice particularly vascular cannulation and/or brain site specific injections

 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint 
  • Familiar with procedures and regulations related to animal care
  • Ability to work independently while being accountable and efficient with time management
  • Previous experience with rodent colony management and caretaking
  • IACUC knowledge and familiarity with up to date compliance rules and regulations
