Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field (or combination of relevant education and direct coding experience).  

Required Qualifications:

  • Coding certification (e.g., RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CCS) through a nationally recognized credentialing body such as AHIMA or AAPC. 

  • 5 or more years medical coding experience.

    • Specifically, experience coding for complex surgical/procedural areas.

  • 2 or more years supervisory experience.

  • Proficiency with standard office computer software (i.e., Microsoft) applications.

  • Ability to learn and apply new software or coding knowledge quickly.  

  • Ability to take initiative in identifying problems or opportunities for improvement, conceptualizing resolutions, and implementing change to workflow/processes.

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication, customer service, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Detail oriented, with strong planning and organizational skills.

  • Strong understanding of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations and industry standards. 

  • Demonstrated experience with maintaining confidentiality with information received.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with Epic Systems.

  • Knowledge of University Human Resources policies and procedures, as well as UI Health Care coding policies and procedures.
