Senior Database Administrator
The University of Iowa Health Care Information Systems has a opportunity to join our team as a Senior Database Administrator! In this role, you will develop institutional analytic data resources and associated maintenance processes (e.g. ETL) across multiple domains to assure optimal availability, performance, integrity, and security. You will provide ongoing support (modifications, enhancements) to existing custom data warehouse structures. You will design and implement data warehouse models in relational (MS SQL Server) and cloud (MS Fabric) environments. You will maintain and extend content in our Caboodle data warehouse (from EHR vendor, Epic) through the administration of vendor-supplied Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) processes and modification of those processes through the vendor interface. You will support data delivery by developing/maintaining Power BI components (Dataflows, Semantic Models, etc.). You will be under the direction and oversight of senior data architecture staff.
This position is eligible for remote work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Position Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain databases and analytic applications associated across a variety of domains.
- Support development of processes that automate data collection, data integration, and reporting.
- Develop, implement, and maintain statistical models and machine learning algorithms.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes.
- Maintain clear and complete documentation for all analytical processes and procedures.
- Provide data management support to ensure data quality, consistency, and accuracy.
- Adapt and learn new methodologies or tools based on project requirements.
- As a member of HCIS, adhere to Enterprise Analytics Division expectations.
- Participate in upgrade-related validations as needed for source systems.
- Participate in off hours support as needed.

Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Engineering or MIS or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Requirements:
- 2-4 years of experience working directly with relational database systems using SQL and SQL procedural languages. Required skills include a thorough understanding of relational database design fundamentals and the ability to write and interpret highly complex SQL DML and DDL statements.
- Ability to interpret, modify and create complex custom database stored procedures and functions.
- Experience with interpreting query execution plans to identify opportunities for improved performance in a very high-volume database environment.
- Extensive experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
- Conversant with Power BI
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and strong interpersonal skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Cloud computing in Microsoft Fabric including Power BI solution architecture, data lake storage techniques and strategies and ETL using Synapse/Data Factory.
- Experience implementing source/version control in SSIS.
- Practical experience working with the Epic EHR and their Clarity and Caboodle analytic platforms.
