Position will be filled as either an Informatics Specialist or Senior Informatics Specialist based on candidate qualifications and interview evaluation.  To be considered for different job classification levels, candidate must apply for each position interested in.

This position is eligible for primarily remote work but may require limited work onsite at times across Community Connect sites. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the remote work program and related policies.

Position Summary:

University of Iowa Health Care department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Senior Informatics Specialist. The Senior Informatics Specialist is a position that has a pivotal role in the coordination and management of activities and resources related to the electronic medical record spanning the entire UI Health Care organization and its Community Connect Iowa (CCI) partners.  The Senior Informatics Specialist role combines clinical knowledge and patient care experience with an understanding of the clinical system, providing an additional area of expertise to the IT system lifecycle.  The Senior Informatics Specialist will assist HCIS staff in design and enhancement of the Epic electronic health record. The ideal candidate will serve as the primary contact for the support of ongoing clinical operations, working with site-based informatics staff to define system requirements and understand business needs, and will organize and manage customer-driven services in an efficient, timely manner. This position will support the Community Connect Iowa (CCI) program and staff.

Position Responsibilities:

  •        Collaborates with CCI site-based informatics staff to identify and prioritize key EHR/IT needs by working closely with nurses, unit staff, and clinical leaders.
  •        Guides clinical staff (physicians/APPs, nursing personnel, and other staff) with translation of clinical practice into electronic health information systems to improvement efficiencies.  Tasks may include many aspects of the EHR such as design of new orders/order sets, Smart Tools, schedule templates, clinical decision support, questionnaires, etc., requiring knowledge of both Epic applications and clinical workflows (across multiple Epic modules). 
  •        Translates clinical and documentation requirements into system design and workflow customization, data collection, and database builds.
  •        Collaborates with CCI site-based informatics staff and local access and revenue end users on the development, optimization, and implementation of IT tools/technology to support efficiency workflows.
  •        Guides content build and assists technical staff in the creation and customization of applications. 
  •        Develops sample input data, and tests system changes for usability, performance, and adherence to standards.  Verifies results with clinicians and IT project managers.
  •        Obtains and maintains Epic certification(s) 
  •        Serves as an informatics/clinical liaison supporting communication among site-based informatics staff, technical staff, clinicians, and vendors to identify and track installation issues, troubleshoot and resolve problems, and address concerns.
  •        Maintains documentation on assigned project requirements and design decision.
  •        Provides one-on-one and small group demonstrations and go-live support, which will be a combination of on-site at CCI locations and virtually.
  •        Mentor staff and student employees in areas of expertise.
  •        Communicates effectively with technical and non-technical staff at verbal, written and presentation level.
  •        Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current trends and issues in healthcare, nursing practice, healthcare informatics, national and statewide standards and regulations, enterprise policies and procedures related to clinical practice, and the legal implications of clinical systems. 
  •        Research and recommend incorporation of new functionality into clinical practice.
  •        Guides site-based informatics staff in the collection and analysis of system usage data via Epic Signal reports to identify opportunities for re-education, workflow analysis, and technology implementation engagement.
  •        Identifies professional development opportunities and encourages continuous learning.
  •        Collaborate with CCI leadership to prioritize requests and throughout the project life cycle for new site implementations (discovery, design, testing, implementation, and support).
  •        Ability to lead change by managing the successful and smooth transition from current to desired culture, practices, structure, and overall organizational environment.
  •        Ability to travel to CCI site locations to support discovery, education, implementation, and on-going support needs across the sites.

Education Required

Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  •        5-7 years’ experience in a clinical position in a health care environment, including experience as a designer, trainer, or super-user in a clinical information system implementation cycle.
  •        Proven experience using an electronic health information system in a clinical role including workflow analysis, implementation, and/or support in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
  •        Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and/or supervising staff and managing projects.
  •        Ability to lead change in a healthcare environment and promote the understanding and effective use of information technology across services.
  •        Excellent communication skills at the verbal, written, and presentation level to all levels of staff, both technical and non-technical.
  •        Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments.
  •        Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, analytical decision making skills, attention to detail and thoroughness.
  •        Demonstrates ability to analyze situations and make recommendations.
  •        Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite of products (such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, OneNote).
  •        Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa, or equivalent for clinical profession.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desirable Qualifications:

  •        Clinical practice experience in an academic healthcare system.
  •        Master’s level preparation or working towards master’s within chosen clinical specialty, informatics, or management coursework.
  •        Experience using the Epic in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
  •        Experience translating customer requirements into system design specifications.
  •        Ability to assess learning needs and match to the most effective education methods.
  •        Holds and maintains Epic certification(s).
  •        Professional level certification.
  •        Previous experience providing 24x7 on-call support.
