The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Otolaryngology is seeking a Support Services Specialist- Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) to support the Molecular Otolaryngology and Renal Research Laboratories (MORL).  Individuals in this position will gain first-hand experience working with experts in the field of genetic hearing loss including the roles of a genetic counselor in laboratory, research, and clinical settings. The GCA will work alongside the genetic counselor and other personnel to support the operations of the MORL’s Clinical Diagnostic Service, a CLIA-approved diagnostic genetic testing laboratory. Primary duties include reviewing data for the interpretation of genetic variants, data entry, and report writing. Additional opportunities may include assisting in research projects on genetic hearing loss and supporting the genetic counselor (GC) in pre-visit, post-visit, and follow up appointment for patients seen in the Department of Otolaryngology. GCA will have the opportunity to shadow GC in the Hearing Loss Genetics Clinic.

Duties to include:

Provide Support Services to Clinical and Non-Clinical Departments:

Perform analysis on data generated by targeted sequence capture and massively parallel sequencing for hearing loss for MORL.

Perform data entry of patient information and testing results in internal databases for MORL

Perform data entry of genetic information into internal and external databases for MORL.

Prepare genetic testing result reports for review by MORL Clinical Diagnostic Services staff.

Comply with MORL CDS SOP and CLIA regulations in efforts to achieve MORL missions including proficiency and competency testing as appropriate.

Assist genetic counselor with tasks for clinical genetic counseling visits including preparing pre-genetic counseling appointment information, assisting in necessary preparation of documentation for genetic testing, and preparing familial letters based on genetic diagnosis.

Recruit and obtain consent for available research studies in accordance with IRB protocols and procedures.

Organize and analyze data for use in research grants and publications.

May perform other duties as assigned in MORL or Clinical areas.

Communicate/Collaborate with Internal and External Constituents:

Collaborate with peers and co-workers to enhance the delivery of health care.

Collaborate and communicate with Internal and External Constituents including healthcare providers and ordering institutions under the direction of MORL staff.

Provide feedback to management on means to achieve goals and resolve service issues.

Develop Programs, Policies, and Practices that Enhance Patient/Staff Environment:

Provide input/suggestions regarding policies, practices, and programs that improve services.

Required Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (both verbal and written) skills.

Demonstrated ability to work as a cooperative team member.

Proficiency in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to analyze information and situations, prioritize tasks, develop solutions to challenges.

Ability to use good judgment while working independently and in a team setting.

Desirable Qualifications:

Demonstrated attention to detail. 

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Knowledge of human genetics and genetics terminology.

Experience working with data.

Demonstrated ability to resolve issues related to customer concerns or workflow changes and challenges.
