The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) Pathology Department is looking to hire a Phlebotomy Supervisor. 

This position will assist University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown location. This is located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA. This is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024. 

Position Summary

This position will provide essential administrative and operational support. Serves as an initial point of contact (Phlebotomy related SME) for cross sectional troubleshooting, problem solving and coordination of new initiatives.  Collaborates closely with faculty and leadership staff in the section to plan for, implement and evaluate strategic initiatives, including clinical initiatives, operational initiatives, and informatics initiatives.  Fosters cross sectional communication and information sharing by facilitating section staff and/or project meetings as directed by the medical directors and/or Lab Manager.

Position Responsibilities

•    Troubleshoots and resolves patient and provider service-related issues in the section, collaborating effectively with medical, administrative, and technical staff as appropriate based on the situation.
•    Collaborates with areas to develop workflows and to design, evaluate and enhance processes.
•    General supervision over the phlebotomy technicians and laboratory technicians.  
•    Participates in staff recruiting initiatives and development of staffing models as directed.
•    Oversees clinical coverage schedule development for phlebotomy.  Provides direct staffing support as needed to maintain coverage.
•    Provides training, support, and corrective feedback to staff.  Identified and implements improvements in areas when and where needed.
•    Uses established electronic reports and/or develops new reports to measure/assess workload and productivity indicators/performance measures.  
•    Manage section SOP’s.
•    Other duties as assigned.

Schedule: 0630-1500 M-F 

Requirements Qualifications

Education Requirements
•    Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.  
Experience Requirements
•    1+ years of experience in laboratory or health care supervision
•    1+ years of experience working directly in laboratory or health care operations
•    Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Desired Qualifications
•    Prior experience directly supervising staff in a clinical laboratory setting or in a direct patient care or patient care support services setting.
•    Prior experience working in a clinical laboratory setting.
•    Prior experience working in an academic health center.
•    Demonstrated success in leading interdisciplinary teams.
•    Certification (or eligibility for certification) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology and/or National Certification Agency.
