Transplant Financial Counselor - Department of Surgery
University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Financial Counselor to support the Organ Transplant Center by working with Transplant patients to ensure financial eligibility for services, provide financial guidance and support to the patient and ensure appropriate reimbursements for services to the Hospital. Financial Counselors work directly with patients and the OTC staff to patients are appropriately approved for services and can maintain long term treatment and payment plans.
Position Responsibilities:
Patient Revenue Management: Serve as a resource for complex revenue cycle issues. Work with staff to suggest additional avenues to resolve patient account inquiries. May review work of others to ensure appropriate payment is collected and approve financial repayment agreements. May decide to appeal a claim. Identify and resolve undesirable trends and risks to reimbursement.
Operations and Performance Standards: Perform quality assurance checks and productivity audits. Implement new processes and targets. Responsible for operational effectiveness of applicable revenue cycle processes. May make recommendations based on analysis of data. May perform specialized components of the department's cash handling process.
Reporting: Gather information for submission and respond to benchmark surveys or questionnaires required by external agencies. Prepare reports to assure quality and productivity expectations are being met.
Communication: Communicate with coding staff; third party payors, clinic staff and patients to address and resolve patient account issues. Advise staff and management regarding claim edits, denials and payment trends. Develop and implement training programs to enhance the skill and expertise of staff.
Human Resource Management: May hire, develop and manage the performance of representatives. Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved. Develop new and current staff through training to improve revenue cycle.
Financial Management: May make budget recommendations and manage expenses.
Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Location: UI Health Care Medical Center University Campus
Pay Grade: 3B Pay Structure

Position Qualifications:
Education Requirement:
- A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Required Qualifications:
- 1 or more years' experience in medical claims processing, health care revenue cycle or medical coding with an advanced knowledge of medical terminology and health care billing.
- Demonstrates proficiency in use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Excel, and Word is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to manage small and large group interaction is required.
- Ability to compose communications and grammatically correct documents in a concise, logical and organized manner.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of University policies, procedures, regulations.
- Experience working with insurance.
- Ability to prioritize and coordinate inquiries and concerns of patients, staff, administration, and public.
