The University of Iowa Health Care Information Systems has an opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Director - Technology Support & Implementation, specifically our service desk. In this role, you will direct the analysis, design, implementation and operational support of multi-disciplinary IT support teams throughout UI Health Care clinical, critical care, departmental and research environments.  You will direct, plan and prioritize teams of technical staff to deliver critical information system services to all levels of UI Health Care faculty, staff, students and customers.  You will direct the recruitment, performance and career development activities of responsible teams. You will closely partner and collaborate with leaders across UI Health Care departments and the academic enterprise, to support organizational initiatives. 

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location. Onsite work will be done at our University of Iowa Health Care Support Services Building in Coralville, IA. 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Oversight of teams like our frontline Help Desk services, advanced EPIC (EHR) Help Desk, Software Escalation and our Disaster Recover/Knowledge Management Team. 
  • Assesses and communicates risks associated with operational technology related issues and trends. 
  • Assists with the development of timeline estimates for Technology Support and Implementation components of large-scale institutional projects and manages priorities to achieve timelines.
  • Reviews and approves software acquisitions and evaluates operational sustainability.
  • Directs staff on project-related activities as they relate to the selection, implementation and support of various information systems services.
  • Contributes collaboratively within a fast-paced environment to ensure design and delivery of high quality, scalable, sustainable and secure technical solutions that adhere to industry and institutional standards and best practices.
  • Acts as a conduit between senior leadership, academic and healthcare departments across campus, all levels of faculty, staff, customers and patients.
  • Understands institutional goals and objectives, translates these goals and objectives into specific work plans for staff and delegate authority needed to ensure project progress and ensure accountability for staff performance.
  • Ensures projects and services meet business and customer needs and expectations
  • Partner with internal and external departments, vendors and customers to assess and develop future strategy and improved delivery requirements
  • Maintains oversight and responsibility of multi-disciplinary IT teams
  • Defines and influences organizational structure and improvement opportunities.
  • Oversee respective services throughout all UI Health Care clinical, critical care, departmental and research environments, including 50 off-site locations.
  • Understands institutional goals and objectives, translates these goals and objectives into specific work plans for staff and delegate authority needed to ensure project progress and ensure accountability for staff performance
  • Ensures projects and services meet business and customer needs and expectations
  • Participates and conducts financial analysis on information systems and related operational support, and drives optimal return on investment for the enterprise and department
  • Ensure supported systems meet or exceed established best practices and business continuity requirements
  • Influences information services decision making at department and enterprise level
  • Recruits and manages the performance of staff
  • Identifies professional development opportunities and encourages continuous learning
  • Identifies essential skills and experiences for the success of the department and oversee the succession planning for critical positions and staff members
  • Leads staff through continuous improvement and organizational change management initiatives
  • Assures staff are respected and treated in professional manner consistent with University policies and guidelines
  • Employs techniques for maintaining staff enthusiasm, energy, focus and productivity
  • Provide regular metrics of related to responsible service to Senior Director or other that may require the information. 
  • Communicates clearly and consistently with all staff and peers. 

Health Care Information Systems (HCIS): Provides and supports information and communication systems and technology that facilitate quality patient care, progressive medical education, and innovative research.

 HCIS services University of Iowa Health Care by providing comprehensive, high-level support for patient care delivery, internal and external communication, technology innovation, medical education, and research. Creating and maintaining a positive, productive, and rewarding environment for information technology and communication staff

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or MIS or an equivalent combination of education and related healthcare technology experience and technical certifications.

Experience Requirements: 

  • Experience (typically 7-10 years) defining, planning and guiding the installation of IT services involving multi-disciplinary teams in a large academic medical center environment with considerable (3-5 years) administrative and management experience including staff management activities.
  • Extensive knowledge of technology spaces, including hardware, networking, storage systems, security, application and server/client services.
  • Extremely organized, highly motivated self-starter with excellent attention to detail and excellent multi-tasking skills
  • Extensive knowledge of technology trends and demonstrated experience applying innovative technology solutions to business and healthcare problems.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audience
  • Experience creating and leading a customer service-oriented team and developing initiatives to drive collaborative and service orientation skills throughout organization.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Experience with change management, continuous improvement initiatives, ITIL, LEAN and project management
  • Experience in the development of standards and policies across functional specialties.
  • Experience with analysis, planning, estimating and scheduling of high-risk, high-impact IT projects.
  • Experience with all aspects of talent management and professional development techniques.
