The University of Iowa Health Care Information System has an opportunity to join our team as an Associate Network Engineer. The Information Technology Services (ITS) organization, a campus-wide provider of technology services for academic, research, and service missions is seeking an Associate Network Engineer to join our Network Services team. This team is responsible for the design, implementation, performance, and ongoing maintenance of the University of Iowa enterprise network, a critical institutional service. This is a Professional & Scientific full–time position is classified as an Associate Network Engineer (PIN1) which is the entry-level for those looking for an opportunity to go into the networking field.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location

The successful candidate will: 

  • Represent the team and broader OneIT organization in partnerships with campus academic and administrative units, as well as representing the University of Iowa to other institutions.
  • Have the ability to work both individually as well as in a team environment in a highly collaborative manner utilizing excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Will work with the Director of Network Services to define a mentoring and skill-building plan with the goal of increasing your network technical skills and contributions to the team.
  • This position will require occasional off-hours work and will participate in a team after-hours on-call rotation.

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Design: 

     

    • Takes guidance from senior Network Engineers on management of networking services.
  • Analysis/ Implementation:
    • Operator level involvement with monitoring and alerting systems.
    • Assist in monitoring campus data networks.
    • Some troubleshooting skills to work with tools to identify basic network issues.
    • Assist in determining appropriate architecture, topology, and transmission requirements for installing network services based on industry or University standards.
  • Support:
    • Respond to incidents and resolve any basic customer issues with the network and network peripheral and endpoint devices.
    • Provide basic physical infrastructure and switching support.
    • Provide hands-on technical installation and oversight for information transport systems.
       

Health Care Information Systems (HCIS): Provides and supports information and communication systems and technology that facilitate quality patient care, progressive medical education, and innovative research.

 

HCIS services University of Iowa Health Care by providing comprehensive, high-level support for patient care delivery, internal and external communication, technology innovation, medical education, and research. Creating and maintaining a positive, productive, and rewarding environment for information technology and communication staff

 

Education Requirements: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Experience Requirements: 

  • Experience (typically 3 months – 1 year) working as a network, systems, or security analyst, or other role involving the support and implementation of an enterprise-class network
  • Fundamental knowledge of:
    • Networking concepts, protocols and services including managing the day-to-day delivery of stable and reliable network services to clients
    • Hardware infrastructure, DNS (domain name system), routers, firewall systems, and cloud computing applications
    • IP addressing
    • OSI model
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills. Must be systematic, technically curious, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation
  • Driver's License and ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety requirements (see website for info) https://uiowa.edu/riskmanagement/vehicle-use
  • Responsible for network equipment replacement, code upgrade. Ability to accomplish day-to-day tasks including ascend/descend a ladder, move, transport up to 50 pounds.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with DNS and DHCP
  • Experience with configuration and support of wired and wireless communication network devices as well as the diagnosis and resolution of basic network problems.
  • Experience working with network documentation tools such as Microsoft Visio.
  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting a variety of wired and/or wireless client devices
  • Experience with monitoring tools and technologies (e.g., Syslog, SNMP, AKIPS, etc.)
  • Experience supporting enterprise level (500+ users) network systems
