The University of Iowa Treasury Operations is seeking a Billing and Loan Collections Specialist.  This position will perform internal collection activities for delinquent accounts receivable and federal and institutional delinquent loan outreach while maintaining compliance with source rules and regulations in accordance with the University policies, state and federal financial aid regulations, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and associated regulations. This role will also assist with cross training of all team members and documentation of procedures.

This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Duties to Include:

  • Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely financial and audit reports, both internal and external. Serve as liaison to vendors, current and former students, current and former employees, general public and University departments concerning inquiries of processing and collection of the University loans and accounts receivable.
  • Support external collection agency relationships including the processing and reconciliation of monthly collection agency invoices.
  • Support student loan administration activities including posting loan activity to borrower accounts and negotiating loan settlement payments with delinquent borrowers.
  • Monitor and reconcile University billing and accounting activity to third party loan system.
  • Process and reconcile periodic State Setoffs in accordance with regulations.
  • Monitor bankruptcy accounts, communicate with General Counsel, process bankruptcy filings/discharges and send non-discharge letters to borrowers.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual reports for Federal student loan programs and default analysis.

About Billing and Loan Collections:

University Billing is the centralized billing and collection point for student accounts and is a division of Treasury Operations. The University Billing and Loan Collections department is responsible for collecting delinquent U-Bill balances of former students, current and former faculty, and staff as well as the general public. The University Billing and Loan Collections department is also responsible for the billing and collection of Federal campus-based and Institutional student loans.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Administrative and/or accounting experience (typically 1 year) to include report preparation, working collaboratively in a team environment and account reconciliations
  • Excellent customer service experience (typically 1 year) including interactions in person, on the phone or via email
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software applications; Excel, Word, and Outlook 
  • Demonstrated competence, analytical skills and report presentation using MS Excel spreadsheet software or other similar software
  • Demonstrated logic, reasoning, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with confidential information 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of the University systems, policies, and procedures
  • Some knowledge of accounts receivable management, collections, loan administration and accounting experience 
  • Some knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Access or other database systems
