University of Iowa Health Care Information Systems and Bioengineering is seeking a Biomedical Engineering Specialist to join our team! In this role, you will function as the primary technical contact on biomedical technology issues. You will assist the Director with activities of the Bioengineering Department in the selection, procurement, and delivery of biomedical equipment and services. You will ensure all program elements are designed and implemented to comply with Joint Commission and other regulatory and inspection agency requirements, guidelines, and standards. You will assist the Director in developing annual goals and objectives related to supporting the growth and development of bioengineering in response to present and future needs. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Supervise a team of technicians responsible for repair and routine maintenance of patient care equipment, directing resources where needed to meet changing maintenance needs.
  • Supervise team member’s work performance including evaluation and approval of leave requests.
  • Coach and develop technicians to support cross training and development on departments, equipment and technology.
  • Develop and implement consistent policies and procedures that guide and support functions of the Bioengineering Department
  • Develop and meet goals with respect to biomedical technology in support of strategic plan.
  • Provide bioengineering resources to review the maintenance capital submittals for biomedical equipment at all sites as requested. 
  • Provide technical support and leadership for medical equipment planning for construction projects involving biomedical equipment at all sites requested.
  • Provide bioengineering resources to conduct pre-purchase evaluations, research vendors, assess cost of ownership, and other activities in support of biomedical equipment acquisitions. 
  • Provide bioengineering resources to offer initial inspections and acceptance testing for acquisition of biomedical equipment. 
  • Provide bioengineering resources to participate in the medical device hazard and recall notification program. Provide bioengineering resources to comply with the Joint Commission medical equipment management standards. 
  • Provide management of equipment performance and service to vendors to maintain the highest standards of patient care. When products or services are found to be unsatisfactory, the engineering specialist is responsible for expediting solutions, including replacing equipment or terminating service agreements. 
  • Integrate management of biomedical equipment maintenance at all sites. 
  • Communicate with key clinical customers through participation on system committees. 
  • Negotiate system-wide service agreements with vendors where appropriate.
  • Supervise and participate in in-service training of new technicians and clinical staff concerning use and operation of patient care equipment.

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree within biomedical engineering or related technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with biomedical equipment or healthcare technology,  typically 3 years. 
  • Advanced electronic training with knowledge of electronic theory and technology.
  • In-depth knowledge of Joint Commission and other applicable standards and regulations.
  • In-depth knowledge of operating room (OR) operations and procedures of a large hospital system. 
  • In-depth knowledge of specialized operating room (OR) equipment and the ability to troubleshoot within an active OR. 
  • Knowledge of many different types of patient care equipment. 
  • Knowledge of computer systems and ability to use basic computer software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, work order tracking, inventory management, and databases).
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement policies and procedures.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical principles to non-technical personnel both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to supervise, direct, evaluate, and delegate work and responsibilities to direct reports.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and recommend solutions.

Desirable Qualifications: 

  •        Experience maintaining medical equipment in a hospital environment.
  •        Experience maintaining BD Alaris products.
  •        Experience supervising technical service staff.
  •        Demonstrated experience working with various service vendors and other customers to arrange availably of equipment for service.
  • Experience evaluating service history of equipment to recommend the continuation or cancellation of contracts or service agreements.
