Ophthalmology Simulation Specialist, Center for Procedural Skills & Simulation
The Center for Procedural Skills and Simulation (CPSS) at University of Iowa Health Care has an opening for a full-time Ophthalmology Simulation Specialist. This position, under the direction of CPSS Director, is responsible for the functioning, operation, and support of all equipment in the CPSS and Ophthalmology lab. The CPSS Ophthalmology Simulation Specialist supports all learning activities related to lab courses and simulated clinical care through development, scheduling, resource management, and production of clinical learning spaces. Simulation related activities such as developing curriculum, educating learners, operation and maintenance of all simulators, computer systems, recording systems, and medical equipment are central to the job. The CPSS Ophthalmology Simulation Specialist provides educational and technical guidance to clients, both internal and external in supporting their simulated learning activities.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY AND SPECIFIC JOB TASKS:
Design and create instructional materials:
- Assist in developing instructional materials to support the curriculum for Ophthalmology courses, CPSS courses, and external agencies.
- Recommend purchasing materials for Ophthalmology simulation and lab courses. Explore purchase options, review products, and provide input for purchase decisions.
- Design healthcare simulation-based learning and assessment activities that meet specific department/course outcomes.
- Collaborate with faculty and department/academic leadership to develop, plan and implement state of the art simulation experiences in accordance with best practices in simulation education, and alignment with curricular goals.
- Facilitate the adult learning process that creates safe non-threatening climate which supports learning across the health care system.
- Implement, facilitate and debrief simulation-based learning and assessment activities as assigned including mannequin-based, multi-manikin sessions, multi station-task training, standardized patients and virtual patient modalities.
Instruct, Train, Consult, Support:
- Support the use of Ophthalmology AV equipment, classroom technologies, and software including Microsoft Office, ICON, Qualtrics, EMS, and Skype. Review and reconcile resources for CPSS activities.
- Instruct faculty, students and other healthcare employees on safe operation of equipment including all manikins and simulation equipment.
- Set up and tear down simulation and Ophthalmology lab stations.
- Facilitate recycling/reusing of medical supplies.
- Support and participate in outreach events such as facility tours, educational events and philanthropic endeavors.
- Advise department/program faculty/stakeholders in clinical and quality improvement methodology, technology and best practices with a focus on standardization and efficiencies across the healthcare continuum.
- Coordinate the collection of data for ongoing research or grant requirements.
- Participate in faculty and department meetings to assist with development and implementation of simulation experiences.
- Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) testing, proctor, organize, schedule and proctor examinations.
- Maintains currency in simulation education through the review of relevant journals, abstracts and scientific literature in existing and emerging simulation technologies.
- Network with other lab/simulation educators at local/state/national level to develop and utilize best practice.
- Participate in the revision/development of cases to be used in teaching settings.
- Assist in the quality assurance of all evaluation tools, exam write ups and debrief materials.
Facilities/Technology Management:
- Support the use of Ophthalmology AV equipment used in lectures, conferences, webinars, etc.; problem-solve routine technology issues.
- Problem solve function issues with simulators and patient care equipment.
- Diagnose function issues with simulators, consulting with manufacturer tech support as needed; Repair simulators or facilitate repair by the manufacturer.
- Coordinate check in and out of equipment; inspection and cleaning at check in.
- Manage scheduling (as backup to supervisor) of academic courses as it relates to facilities.
- Report AV Equipment and Technology needs to Health Care Information Services (6-0001).
- Report building facility maintenance needs to Engineering Services Center (#159).
- Assist with acquisition of necessary equipment and supplies for educational events.
- Research and develop simulation education models that will assist learners in practicing clinical skills in a safe, low fidelity, pre patient contact environment.
- Facilitate high fidelity simulation models to assist learners in practicing clinical, communication and team training skills.
- Organize and maintain Ophthalmology and CPSS instructional equipment and supplies, anticipate modifications and/or new equipment needs in order to meet changing certification needs of learners.
Operational Management (Financial and Administrative):
- Maintain inventory, procure supplies, equipment, materials or services within established guidelines. Serve as ‘receiver’ of goods.
- Assist in monitoring accounts/expenditures.
- Provide input into development of CPSS policies and procedures, as directed by the executive committee.
Work schedule: Some flexibility between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- A bachelor's degree in health care, anatomy, science or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong foundation in clinical skills including history taking, patient education, common clinical procedures, and inter-personal communication.
- Experience with laboratory settings, tissue handling, and Bioskills best practices, or willingness to learn.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex scheduling and balance multiple competing demands for resources.
- Flexibility to accommodate variability in work hours as necessary to facilitate learning events
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite.
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
- Certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) or a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS), or expectation to complete certification within 1 year of hiring.
Desired:
- Ability to move 50 pounds or more on occasion.
- Previous experience with clinical simulation equipment or other complex technological devices.
- Knowledge of UI Health Care policies, procedures and regulations.
- Demonstrated skills to troubleshoot and investigate operational difficulties with medical, computer and/or audiovisual equipment.
- Knowledge of simulation education with scenario development and debriefing skills.
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) – current certification.
