Education Required:
- A BA or BFA degree in theatrical production for theatre, dance, and/or opera or equivalent educational and professional experience.
Required Qualifications:
- A BA or BFA degree in theatrical production for theatre, dance, and/or opera or equivalent educational and professional experience.
- Minimum 1 year experience as lead carpenter or shop supervisor in a major university or professional scene shop.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently from computer models and technical drawings with verbal instructions from the technical director at a highly efficient level.
- Working experience and high level of skill in scenery construction inclusive of:
- wood structure, layout, construction techniques, metal structure, jigs, laser measuring and marking tools.
- Highly proficient at MIG welding and use of steel cold saws.
- Detail oriented while demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-motivated and an independent thinker who consistently meets deadlines, resolves conflicting priorities, and has outstanding interpersonal skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Working experience with foam carving and wire cutting, sculpting, and shaping. Knowledge of Fiberglas construction, resin casting, and other plastic fabrication techniques.
- Training and working experience with finish carpentry and cabinetry work including milling and shaping and furniture construction techniques.
- Exposure to advanced metal working processes, including machining, rolling, and bending.
- Working experience with CNC shapers for wood, metals, and plastics.
- Experience supervising student crews in academic scene shop environment.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Vectorworks
- Proficiency as a rigger in a proscenium theatre. Knowledge of synchronized chain motors and Programmed Logic Controllers (PLC), electro-mechanical motor drive systems, and variable frequency drives used for the actuation of scenery.
