Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Senior Director of Research Services leads the Research Services department within the University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) organization and acts as an advocate on behalf of the research community at the University of Iowa to the ITS organization and beyond. Key partners for this position include colleagues in OneIT (departmental and collegiate IT), Healthcare IT, and the office of the Vice President for Research. The position is responsible for advancing the University’s investment in cyberinfrastructure through the strategic planning, integration, coordination, and deployment of information technology and human resources to support research, scholarship, and creative work. The position also acts as a member of the ITS leadership team and provides leadership to the broader campus IT community.
This is a Professional and Scientific full-time position classified as a Senior IT Director (PIM3).

The University of Iowa is a comprehensive Research 1 institution and has annual research expenditures of over $500 million. The ITS Research Services department is composed of 15 staff and students and has an annual budget of over $2 million per year. Key services supported by the Research Services Department include High-Performance Computing, Research Data Storage, Interactive Data Analytics, and Research Technology & Compliance Consultations.

Key Job Duties Include:

  • Responsible for the successful operation of various research IT services such as high-performance computing (HPC), research storage services, research data analytics, specialized systems, and application support.
    Develop and implement strategies to engage the research community in developing and supporting information technology for research and scholarly work on campus. 
  • Manage and develop highly capable and productive support personnel, recognizing the strengths of each team member and building on those strengths while actively working to improve capability through mentoring, guidance, education, and developmental opportunities.
  • Work with the rest of OneIT leadership to steward and advance an IT governance strategy that ensures communication and transparency of IT projects & services, provides clarity on IT decision-making, aligns investments with strategy, minimizes risk, and broadens input from the campus community.
    Lead efforts for strategic planning for the IT support of scholars and researchers on campus. 
  • Manage expenses within the unit’s budget, accurately forecast budgets, and propose new budgets for the next fiscal year; all expenses should be value and/or mission-driven.
  • Actively work to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within Research Services, ITS, OneIT, and the University.
  • Lead engagements with faculty and other campus stakeholders on collaborative funding opportunities such as internal and external grants and funding proposals.

Education Requirement:
A Bachelor’s degree. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may also serve to meet these minimum requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Technology experience (typically 10+ years) including management education or experience.
  • Demonstrated and considerable experience successfully leading a technology team or organization.
  • A passion for and in-depth knowledge of academic research and research computing environments, including working knowledge of high-performance computing, research storage, high-performance networking, research applications, and collaboration tools.  Must have strong proficiencies in at least one of these areas.
  • A strong customer service orientation and enthusiasm for the application of technology across a broad range of disciplines.
  • Demonstrated and considerable experience successfully managing, developing, and retaining staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously within given time frames.
  • Excellent people skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse technical and non-technical staff.
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Demonstrated job-related experience with and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the work/academic environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree.
  • Experience with grant submissions to academic research funding organizations such as NSF, NIH, NASA, DOE, MacArthur Foundation, Mellon Foundation.
  • Deep understanding of new computing, software, and storage practices for university research efforts. For example, areas of mastery could include current large-cluster computing practices, advanced visualization, and analytics, or data and informatics practices.
  • In-depth experience in a specific research discipline.
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting and/or with clinical or medical research.
  • Experience working with regulatory regimes such as FISMA, HIPAA, and ITAR.
  • Experience supporting technology in a higher educational setting.
