Position Summary:

This role will support the design, implementation, monitoring, and continuous optimization of the network infrastructure for University of Iowa Healthcare. This position will support and advance Wide Area Network (WAN) operations to ensure secure, reliable connectivity for critical healthcare functions. This role will oversee the execution of technical projects, provide expertise on advanced network technologies, conduct comprehensive network assessments and troubleshooting, and ensure optimal performance across core, access layer, and Wi-Fi networking services.

 This is an on-site position with the flexibility to transition to a hybrid work arrangement after the initial onboarding period. Additionally, this role requires participation in a 24x7 on-call rotation. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a collaborative mindset, expertise in enterprise-level network operations, and the ability to excel in a dynamic, healthcare-oriented environment.

 Position Responsibilities:

  •        Work in concert with others to plan and manage the design, development, and support of the UIHC enterprise wireless and wired networks and services.
  •        Install and maintain switching and routing network communication electronics in LAN, MAN, and WAN environments.
  •        Monitor data network health using various network applications for live analysis, troubleshooting, and RCA investigation.
  •        Operate management tools and utilities to design, implement, document, and troubleshoot network services.
  •        Participate in and/or lead communication services problem solving across numerous device types utilizing wireless, copper, and fiber optic transmission media.
  •        Troubleshoot problems of moderate to a high degree of complexity and determine and recommend appropriate action for correction. Work with vendors, other staff members and end users to ensure and maintain proper working conditions.
  •        Plan and coordinate local and remote service outages and subsequent restoration with telecommunication providers, infrastructure, network, and end user community as required.
  •        Assist with security monitoring, performance monitoring, diagnostics, testing and preventative maintenance of communications equipment and communication services.
  •        Develop and implement detailed procedures related to network installation, operation, performance monitoring, security, preventative maintenance, customer support, troubleshooting and repair. Ensure that all procedures and inventory documentation are kept accurate and current.
  •        Assist in developing training, KB, templates, and standard operating procedure documentation.
  •        Analyze communication requirements and assist in developing new solutions and services recommendations.
  •        Assist in determining project estimates in terms of cost, time and resources required.
  •        Prepare written and oral recommendations for management staff regarding network, system, or service improvements.
  •        Provide technical guidance and assistance to peer network engineers, desktop and helpdesk staff, and other departments as required.
  •        Keep abreast of trends and technical development in the networking field especially as it relates to healthcare.
  •        Follow policies and procedures in accordance with the guidelines of The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and HealthCare Information Systems (HCIS)
  •       Perform other duties as delegated in support of overall HCIS activities.
  •        May provide functional supervision over other network engineering staff.

Salary: $85,843.00 to commensurate – 5B

Education Required

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 Experience Requirements

  •        Minimum of three years of experience with the design, installation, and management of enterprise-class wired data network services.
  •        Knowledge of the OSI model, industry best practices, and design/configuration standards for communication technologies and services
  •        Demonstrated ability to work independently and in team environments with a strong focus on customer service.
  •        Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  •        A valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.

 Desirable Qualifications

  •        Experience in a Healthcare environment.
  •        Experience with various operating systems including Windows, Mac OS, and mobile device Oses.
  •        Experience with management platforms including Cisco Catalyst Center, ISE, Cisco Spaces, Infoblox, SDWAN management, MS Azure portal, and Equinix Network Edge.
  •        Knowledge of and experience with configuration and maintenance of BGP, OSPF, STP, HSRP, QoS, 802.1q, 802.1x, QoS, MPLS, DNS, DHCP, multicast, Syslog.
  •        Knowledge of various Cisco hardware families including 8k ISR, 9k switching, 9k Wi-Fi.
