Senior Systems Administrator
This position is eligible for primarily remote work but may require limited work onsite at times. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the remote work program and related policies.
Position Summary:
Iowa Health Care department of Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator who will be responsible for contributing to the design, development, and management of our cloud infrastructure to ensure it aligns with our business goals. This role requires extensive knowledge of cloud computing and the ability to work closely with various stakeholders, including DevOps teams and developers. This position will be responsible for helping to develop and guide cloud governance practices across the organization.
The position will concurrently be responsible for general systems administration as part of the business and pharmacy systems team. This will entail setup, maintenance, and administration of a variety of enterprise Microsoft Windows servers and support of vendor applications. A strong understanding of MS SQL, MS IIS, firewalls, networking, and storage systems is also a requirement. Many of these systems will interface directly with the Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR).
This individual will contribute to troubleshooting complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of contributing factors. This person must also network with key contacts outside their own area of expertise for issue identification and resolution. Position requires some 24x7 on-call and on-site support.
Position Responsibilities:
- Participate in the design, development, and management of cloud infrastructure to execute cloud computing strategies.
- Collaborate with the DevOps team on strategic planning and technical execution, including application building, deployment, and migration within public cloud environments.
- Participate and provide input with the architecture and design of cloud infrastructures and business and pharmacy applications.
- Research and evaluate innovative technologies and present recommendations and justifications on hardware and software deployment solutions.
- Collaborate with service owners and vendors to define the scope of requests.
- Ensure compliance with security policies using enterprise endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions.
- Represent UI Health Care technology interests to internal and external parties.
- Develop documentation for procedures, installations, setup, maintenance, and testing plans for new systems and upgrades to support peers and junior staff.
- Oversee server patch management, monitor system capacity and performance, and administer SQL, IIS, and Windows operating systems.
- Participate in business hours and 24 x 7 on-call support as required and requested.
- Maintain and manage high availability solutions, including failover clustering and load balancing.
- Applies proven analytical problem-solving skills to help identify and resolve complex hardware and software issues.
- Manage and participate in projects as assigned, and work with team members across the company to deliver project goals.
- Provide mentoring and cross-training of systems administration to key stakeholders.

Education Required
Bachelor’s degree in MIS, Computer Science, or related degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
Experience Requirements
- 5-7 years of experience in IT infrastructure development
- In-depth knowledge of public cloud infrastructure and services, with a solid understanding of server hardware, operating systems, IIS, MS SQL, and file management systems
- Strong customer service orientation, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects efficiently with attention to detail and adaptability.
- Commitment to organizational effectiveness in meeting timelines and budgets
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with Azure or AWS
- Experience working in a healthcare environment.
- Experience with networking technologies and firewalls.
- Knowledge of diverse IT ecosystems and their integration with cloud solutions
- Knowledge of best practices for implementing security hardening policies
- Experience writing automation scripts in any language (e.g., PowerShell, Bicep, Python, Ruby, REST API, Perl and/or others.)
