As a Systems Administrator in Enterprise Infrastructure, you’ll be part of a team that provides application servers to various campus colleges, departments and business units that are necessary for the University to achieve its mission of providing learning and research environments to our students, faculty, and staff. 

Enterprise Infrastructure is a part of Information Technology Services (ITS), a service organization that provides technology support for the University of Iowa campus. As a valued member of the Enterprise Infrastructure Managed Application Services (EI-MAS) teams, you will have the opportunity to learn about and work with a wide variety of technologies, including:

  • Windows Server and Linux systems administration
  • Configuration management and systems automation
  • Virtualization technologies
  • System hardening and security
  • Cloud technologies

You will work with an IT Manager in Enterprise Infrastructure to develop a mentoring and skill-building plan. The purpose of this plan is to:

  • Enable you to build technical skills.
  • Build relationships with team members and the campus IT community we support.
  • Incorporate your input and skills in new services and innovating existing ones.

As a Systems Administrator, some of your job duties will include:

  • Utilizing automation tools to configure and install server applications running on Windows Server operating systems
  • Identifying performance issues and assisting in troubleshooting with campus applications and services
  • Working with applications and services that are local (on-prem), Cloud (AWS and Azure), and Hybrid.

Occasional off-hours and weekend work may be required along with participation in our on-call support rotation.

Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location. Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of education and related experience in technical support may also serve to meet these minimum requirements.
  • Experience (typically 2-4 years) supporting and managing multiple systems and applications.
  • Experience working with Windows Server supporting server-based applications.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and resolving technical problems using diagnostic techniques and tools for unusual or performance-related problems.
  • Experience with IT security hardening techniques.
  • Experience with automation and/or programming in any modern language. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with virtualization (Citrix, Remote Desktop Services (RDS), VMware, etc.)
  • Understanding of cloud computing concepts
  • Knowledge of configuration management technologies (such as Puppet, Chef, or Ansible)
  • Knowledge of version control technologies (such as git)
  • Experience with modern web server technologies (such as IIS, Apache, Tomcat, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Unix/Linux
  • Experience with database server concepts or administration (such as Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL, Postgres, Mongo, etc.)
  • Experience supporting technology in a higher education setting.
