IT Systems Analyst or Administrator - Institute for Vision Research
The Institute for Vision Research is seeking a 100% IT Systems Analyst (PIF1; 3B) or Systems Administrator (PIF2; 4B).
The IT Systems Analyst provides direct management, configuration, and maintenance of multiple servers (mostly Linux, some Windows). Duties include installing and updating operating systems and packages on new and existing systems, regularly reviewing security scans, and managing cryptographic certificates.
The IT Systems Administrator manages and secures a complex server environment supporting advanced research initiatives. This role requires expertise in Linux-based systems administration, virtualization technologies, and network security. The IT Systems Administrator will design, implement, and maintain robust server infrastructures, ensuring high availability, data integrity, and compliance with institutional security standards. The position also involves automation of routine tasks, proactive monitoring, and collaboration with research teams to support specialized computational workflows.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Key areas of responsibility include analysis and design, implementation, documentation, support, and relationship management.
Identifies, places and installs server hardware in institutional data centers
Refers unresolved support requests to Senior IT Personnel.
Ability to learn and apply new software applications.
Regularly evaluates security scans and applies necessary remediation.
Troubleshoots server problems and helps deploy new systems.
Manages data backup and archival.
Assists with general IT issues as needed.
Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: Preferred schedule Monday - Friday, 8:00a-5:00p.
Location: Medical Education Research Facility (MERF), Iowa City
On Campus: This position is performed fully on campus.
A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience building and managing Linux servers (Alma/Centos/RHEL).
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong attention to detail and ability to analyze complex workflow problems and recommend solutions.
Experience developing and maintaining custom bash scripts for automating recurring jobs.
Experience configuring and using network file services on Mac/Linux/Windows clients is required.
Knowledge of network and computer security concepts.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION (IT SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR)
A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience building and managing Linux servers (Alma/Centos/RHEL).
Experience configuring and managing Apache and nginx.
Experience configuring and managing network file services with Samba.
Experience with building and running virtual machines. (Kernel-based VM, QEMU, Xen)
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
