The University of Iowa Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is seeking a research assistant to be an integral member of the team. This position conducts clinical research within parameters of study protocols through the ICTS CRU. Assists in the performance of clinical research sample processing, shipping, record management, electronic data entry, scheduling, compiling results; and to collect, tabulate and assist in the processing of samples obtained. Performs difficult technical procedures and allied duties related to a function of a clinical, environmental, teaching or research laboratory; maintains laboratory area and equipment. Provides functional supervision to Laboratory Assistants and students as required.  

Duties to include but not limited to:

·         Perform laboratory processing, storage and shipment of all biological samples collected in the ICTS CRU based upon protocols developed by University of Iowa (UI) clinical research investigators and their teams.

·         Read and understand research protocols that will require lab processing in the CRU.

·         Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare the ICTS CRU laboratory to ensure efficiency.  

·         Record and consolidate data in the laboratory

·         Inspects specimen, performs point of care testing and records the results.

·         Responsible for the operation, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation. Participates in evaluation of new laboratory equipment and makes recommendations for product acquisition.

·         Maintain logs and records for equipment and service.

·         Delegate appropriately to students and laboratory assistants.

·         Function as a team player and demonstrate flexibility on a day to day basis.

About ICTS: The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. These efforts will lead to the development of novel therapies and healthcare delivery strategies, the integration of translational research and clinical practice, and, ultimately to measurable improvements in the health of Iowa and the nation.

Required Qualifications

·         Requires the academic knowledge of a discipline and the ability to translate, adapt, and apply the knowledge that is associated with a Bachelor’s degree or 6 mos- 1 year related experience.

·         1 – 3 years’ laboratory experience in a clinical, research or core laboratory with expertise in operating, calibrating, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting equipment.

·         General computer skills are required.

·         Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team as well as to function independently is required.

·         Ability to work some weekends, evenings, and nights per study protocol as required.

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required including positive interpersonal skills as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions is required. 

Desirable Qualifications

·         Experience with clinical research is desirable.

·         Knowledge of regulatory guidelines and procedures is desirable.

·         Ability to work independently is desirable.

·         Experience in processing research specimen is desirable.

·         Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or specialist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
