Senior Application Developer - Telemedicine

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking a Senior Application Developer to provide technical leadership and project management support for the development, configuration and implementation of telemedicine offerings.  Complete application development and provide technical support of all telemedicine related activities, ongoing maintenance of telemedicine offerings and the integration into clinical and business operation supported by Epic and ERP systems. 

Core job duties include:

  • Serve as technical lead on large-scale telemedicine projects by recommending technical design for new or revised applications related to Epic and telemedicine while leading Epic build activities 
  • Manage small-scale projects by developing project plans and leading project teams to ensure project goals and objectives are met
  • Provide technical support for all telemedicine service lines by assisting in resolving end users’ issues and concerns
  •  Support ongoing maintenance of telemedicine-related applications and systems by participating in upgrade and testing activities
  •  Work directly with customers to identify critical functional requirements for telemedicine offerings
  • Collaborate with application owners, stakeholders, vendors and information system teams to implement and support telemedicine offerings
  • Establish and maintain build standards for telemedicine functionality. Review development on a regular basis to ensure functionality is kept current.
  •  Develop and maintain detailed support plans associated with ongoing maintenance and support of telemedicine service lines and related applications
  • Research, review, troubleshoot and analyze system opportunities and problems to identify solutions and/or make appropriate referrals
  • Travel to customer sites in support of the implementation or upgrade of telemedicine services
  • May provide administrative and/or functional supervision over assigned staff (Senior level)
  • Wear a pager and provide some 24x7 on-call support

Salary: $65,000 to commensurate – Paygrade 5B

Position Qualifications:

Education Required

Bachelor’s in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience. 

Required Qualifications

·         Experience in the development and/or support of applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance business processes, typically 5-7 years for Senior Developer in leadership roles including experience with programming tools, a comprehensive understanding of database technologies

·         Experience contributing to the support, configuration and development of at least one Epic-specific healthcare enterprise application

·         Experience working with application owners and/or vendors to analyze system and integration requirements

·         Demonstrated ability to work independently with a strong focus on customer service utilizing established processes and procedures

·         Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management

·         A valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety requirements.

·         Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with technical and non-technical staff

·         Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment 


Desirable Qualifications:


·         Experience supporting an EHR in an ambulatory or hospital setting

·         Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with any of the following workflows: scheduling, referrals, ambulatory or inpatient clinical documentation, patient EHR portals, and telemedicine

·         Epic certification(s) related but not limited to the following:  EpicCare Ambulatory, EpicCare Inpatient, EpicCare Procedure Orders, Epic MyChart, Epic Prelude, Cadence, Referrals

·         Technical project lead experience implementing and managing multiple small to large-scale projects

·         Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system implementation projects

·         Proven ability to write application test scripts

·         Experience implementing videoconferencing solutions for business/ healthcare.
