The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst in the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science will be an integral member of the Biomedical Informatics Core. This position is primarily responsible for providing direct support, consultation, guidance, and training to users, and to identify technical and data solutions for both the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science and its supported user community of researchers. Assist researchers with data needs through query design and consultations. This position will work with a wide variety of faculty, staff, and students to assist in their research efforts and will require strong communication skills and an understanding of the research process to facilitate technology solutions for research teams. Support the daily operations of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science and assist with technology planning to maximize user and organizational effectiveness.

Duties to include but not limited to:

  • Review data, analytics and modeling requests and requirements.
  • Document data and analytics requests thoroughly in established systems.
  • Assist in the preparation, cleansing, and verification and validity of data, through plausibility, completeness, concordance, comparability, conformance.
  • Creates reports and fulfills data requests for research.
  • Design, implement, and provision data solutions via modeling, schema development, ETL and data quality processes.
  • Evaluate, optimize, and troubleshoot queries and ETL processes for performance and evolving requirements.
  • General understanding of statistics and data analytics.
  • Understand expected common table output for research sponsors.
  • Contribute ideas. Seek ways to improve assigned processes.
  • Provide training and share insights with customers on data analytics and reporting.

About ICTS: The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. These efforts will lead to the development of novel therapies and healthcare delivery strategies, the integration of translational research and clinical practice, and, ultimately to measurable improvements in the health of Iowa and the nation.

This position is eligible to participate in a hybrid (partially remote) and/or remote work schedule. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Data Science, Informatics, Information Science, Health Science related degree, or other related degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience in information technology support or healthcare may also serve to meet these minimum requirements.
  • A minimum of 3 years related experience in IT Support, informatics, data & analytics, research IT, clinical health care, business relationship management or a combination of the above.
  • Demonstrated experience with databases, healthcare data, research data collection, and electronical medical record data or a combination of the above.
  • Demonstrated experience creating reports and analytics for business needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a systematic troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Experience with requirements elicitation and documentation for projects and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; the ability to explain technology concepts to non-technical faculty, staff and students.
  • Experience developing and maintaining reference documents for both external use (customers/clients) and internal use (knowledge management).
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams.

 Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience supporting informatics, data, analytics or information technology in a higher educational setting, academic healthcare, or academic research environment.
  • Experience using business analytics tools.
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Experience with Epic, Cerner of other electronic health records.
  • Understanding of HIPAA, FERPA and FISMA.
  • Experience with medical coding and medical terminology.
  • Experience with Project Management fundamentals.
  • Experience using the ITIL framework and service management tools.
